FLIPPED-still'Flipped' getting good buzz There's some good early buzz for "Flipped," the Rob Reiner-directed movie that was shot in the Ann Arbor area in the summer of 2009. The '50s-set family-friendly film follows the coming-of-age relationship of a young girl and boy from elementary school to junior high, and stars Madeline Carroll and Callan McAuliffe in the lead roles, with a cast that includes Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller and Aidan Quinn.

The Los Angeles Times has already described "Flipped" as "a real comeback for Reiner," who directed such classics as "This is Spinal Tap," "Stand by Me" and "When Harry Met Sally."

It's scheduled to open in metro Detroit on Aug. 27.

River Rouge firefighters in 'The Double'

Several River Rouge firefighters got to be part of the action Wednesday when "The Double" filmed in the city. The political thriller rented two fire trucks and hired seven firefighters as extras, according to Lt. Doug Savitskie. Actors Martin Sheen and Topher Grace took time to talk to the firefighters. "They were just really down to earth, inquiring about our jobs," says Savitskie.

'Hostel 3' set to film locally

Now this is scary. The third installment in the "Hostel" series has been approved for the state's tax incentives for filmmaking, according to the Michigan Film Office. The movies are known for graphic violence.

Romancing 'Vamps'

How will "Vamps" -- a vampire-themed movie set to begin filming here next month -- be different from the "Twilight" series and HBO's "True Blood"?

"It's a romantic comedy," says producer Lauren Versel, who describes the project as fun and upbeat. "It's about what happens when you have to choose between eternal life and true love."

"Vamps" will be the first time that director Amy Heckerling, who also wrote the screenplay, and actress Alicia Silverstone have worked together since their 1995 hit "Clueless."

The movie also stars Sigourney Weaver. Filming is expected to take about six weeks.
